My Google Business Profile Isn’t Showing. Here’s Exactly Why.
You typed your own business name into Google and nothing came up. Or it showed up but not on the map. Or it’s there but miles below competitors you know are smaller than you. Something is wrong.
This article walks you through the nine most common reasons a UK business is not showing on Google Maps and exactly what to do about each one. Work through it top to bottom. The first match is almost always the problem.
If you’d rather we just look and tell you, that’s what the £97 Rank Rescue Audit is for. 48 hours, one PDF, done.
Reason 1: Your profile is suspended and you don’t know it
The most common one and the one most owners miss. A suspended profile doesn’t get a big red warning banner. It just quietly drops out of Maps. You can still see the profile when you log in, which is why owners miss it for months.
How to check: log into your Google Business Profile dashboard. If the status bar says “Suspended” or if your profile has any red warning icons, you’re suspended.
Why it happens: policy violation, usually keyword stuffing in the name, a virtual office address, or a suspicious review pattern.
Reason 2: Your primary category is wrong
Google uses your primary category as the strongest ranking signal. If you’re a plumber but you picked “Plumbing Supply Store” you won’t show for “plumber near me”.
How to check: log in, look at your category, search your main keyword from a different postcode, see who’s ranking. Compare their category to yours.
Fix: change it in the dashboard. It takes effect within a day or two. More detail in the 5-step Rescue Method.
Reason 3: NAP mismatch across the web
Google cross-references your Name, Address and Phone number across every directory it knows. If Yell says one phone number and your profile says another, Google trusts neither.
How to check: search your business name in quotes. Click through every directory result. Write down the phone numbers. If any are wrong, fix them.
Fix: go to each directory and claim the listing. Update or remove. It’s slow. It’s also one of the biggest wins. A Full Optimisation upgrade includes this.
Reason 4: No recent activity
A profile with no recent posts, no recent photos, and no recent reviews looks dead to Google. Dead profiles drop in ranking.
Fix: post one update. Upload three photos. Ask two customers for reviews this week. Keep it up.
Reason 5: Wrong service area
If you’re a service area business, check your area. Too wide means Google doesn’t rank you strongly anywhere. Too narrow means you miss customers. Rule of thumb: pick the area you actually visit. If you cover a 20 mile radius, set 20 miles. Not 50. Not 5.
Reason 6: You’re near a lot of competitors
Google’s local algorithm considers physical distance. If five competitors are within a mile of you and you’re at number six on proximity, you need to outweigh them on everything else to show higher.
Fix: get more reviews. Post more. Fill in more attributes. Upload more photos. It’s a long game but it works.
Reason 7: Your website is down or slow
Your Google Business Profile links to your website. If your site is down, loading in over 6 seconds, or showing security warnings, Google demotes your profile.
How to check: run your URL through PageSpeed Insights. Anything under 50 on mobile is hurting you.
Reason 8: Duplicate listings
Sometimes there are two Google Business Profiles for the same business and Google can’t tell which is real. It hides both.
How to check: search your business name and address. If you see two profiles, you have a duplicate.
Fix: merge them in the dashboard, or report the duplicate.
Reason 9: Your account is new and hasn’t earned trust
Brand new profiles take 2 to 4 weeks to start showing reliably. If you just created yours, keep filling it in every day and the cold start resolves itself.
The fast way to find out which one it is
Run all 9 checks. It takes about 2 hours. Or pay £97 and we’ll do it for you and send a branded PDF in 48 hours with every problem flagged and every fix in plain English.
FAQ
How long does Google take to show changes?
Most changes show up within 24 to 72 hours. Category changes can take a week.
Is it my hosting that’s the problem?
Sometimes. If your site is hosted on a slow shared server and mobile speed is under 30, that alone can hurt local rank.
Can you fix a suspended profile for me?
Yes. The £297 Full Optimisation includes reinstatement support if needed. See the pricing page.
Do I need to buy Google Ads for my profile to work?
No. Google Business Profile is free and Ads are not a ranking factor.
