Trade Business Not On Google Maps? Start Here

If your trade business is missing from Google Maps, you have probably already tried a few things, searched your own name, refreshed your profile, maybe asked a mate who “does a bit of websites”. This page is different. It is not another long technical walkthrough. It is a short decision guide for a busy tradesperson, built to help you work out which kind of problem you have, and therefore which fix to spend your limited time on. Get the diagnosis right and the fix is usually quick. Guess wrong and you can waste weeks on the wrong thing.

We have separate detailed guides for the technical fixes, and we will point you to them at the right moment. First, let us find out what type of “not on Maps” problem you are actually dealing with, because there are really only three.

The three types of “not on Maps”, and how to tell them apart

Spend two minutes on this before you touch anything. On your phone, search your exact business name plus your town. Then search the service you offer plus “near me” from your work address. What you see decides everything that follows.

Type one: you cannot find your business at all, even by name

If searching your own business name and town returns nothing, your profile is either not created, not verified, suspended, or has been merged or lost. This is the most serious type but often the quickest to resolve, because it is a status problem rather than a ranking problem. There is nothing to “rank higher”, the listing simply is not live and trusted. If this is you, do not waste time on reviews or keywords yet. Go straight to the status fix.

Read next: our guide on Google Business Profile not showing up walks through verification, and if you have had a suspension notice, our profile suspended and reinstatement guides cover the recovery process step by step. Sort the status first, then come back.

Type two: you appear by name, but never in the map block for your services

If your business shows up when you search its name, but never appears in the three-business map block when you search your actual service, then your listing is live but not competitive. This is a ranking problem, not a status problem. The usual causes are the wrong primary category, a service area that does not match where you work, thin or stale reviews, and inconsistent details across the web. These are the levers that decide who makes the map block for a given search.

Read next: our guide on how to rank higher on Google Maps covers the ranking levers in detail. If you are in a specific trade, our vertical guides for plumbers, electricians, roofers and others get more specific.

Type three: you appear from some places or phones, but not others

If a friend across town cannot see you but you can, or you appear on one phone and not another, this is usually about proximity and personalisation, not a fault. Google shows different Maps results depending on where the searcher physically is. You will naturally show more strongly closer to your listed location and less as distance grows. That is not a bug to fix, it is a reason to make sure your service area and address are set correctly so you are strong across the whole patch you actually cover.

What to ignore while you work this out

A quiet phone tempts people into expensive distractions. While you diagnose which of the three types you have, do not rush into a brand new website, do not buy backlink packages from cold callers, and do not pay for fake reviews, which breach Google’s rules and can get your profile suspended, turning a Type two ranking problem into a Type one status disaster. Fix the real cause for your type, in order, and leave the rest.

How to decide if a paid audit is worth it

Doing this yourself is entirely possible, and the guides linked above will take you most of the way. A paid audit earns its place in three situations. First, when you have followed the guides and still cannot tell which type you have. Second, when you appear live but simply cannot work out why competitors keep beating you into the map block. Third, when your time is worth more on the tools than on your phone, and you would rather someone hand you a finished, prioritised list. If none of those apply, work through the guides above and you may not need us at all. We would rather tell you that honestly.

Not sure which type you have? We will tell you

If the three-type check has not made it obvious, that is exactly what a Rank Rescue Audit is for. For £97 you get a 48-hour, plain English review of your Google Business Profile and local ranking. No jargon, no contracts, no lock-in. You get a branded PDF that names the exact problem, tells you which type it is, and lists the fixes in the order that will get you back on the map.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my trade business not on Google Maps at all?

If you cannot find it even by searching your own business name and town, the listing is not live or not trusted, meaning it is unverified, suspended, merged or never created. That is a status problem, not a ranking one. Fix the status first through verification or reinstatement before touching anything else.

Why do I show up by name but not for my services?

Your listing is live but not competitive for those searches. The usual causes are a wrong primary category, a service area that does not match where you work, thin or stale reviews, and inconsistent business details across the web. Those are the levers that decide who appears in the map block.

Why can some people see my business on Maps and others cannot?

Google Maps results change with the searcher’s location, so you naturally appear more strongly close to your listed address and less further away. This is normal rather than a fault. Make sure your service area and address are set correctly so you are as strong as possible across your whole patch.

Should I buy reviews to get back on the map faster?

No. Fake reviews breach Google’s rules and can get your profile suspended, which turns a fixable ranking problem into a far worse status problem. Collect genuine, recent reviews from real customers instead. It is slower but it is the only approach that lasts.

When is a paid audit actually worth it?

When you have worked through the guides above and still cannot tell which type of problem you have, when you are live but keep losing the map block to competitors and cannot see why, or when your time is better spent on the tools. If none of those apply, the guides above may be all you need.
